Why do narcissists devalue?

Narcissists usually idealise their partner in the beginning of a relationship, when they are feeling special and admired and getting narcissistic supplies. To avoid the deflation of their self-esteem, they devalue their partner by finding fault in them, to boost their own self-esteem.
