Air conditioning causes a large drop in cabin temperature, air humidity present in the air condensates into water droplets. It is similar to mist, fog and clouds. If water droplets enter in contact with a solid they form dew and moisture.
What is the smoke in airplane cabin?
It’s (probably) not on fire. Planes taking off from hot and humid climates often experience this unique “indoor weather.” That’s because the steamy air outside is being rapidly cooled and condensed by the plane’s onboard air conditioning unit. This creates waves of water vapor that can appear eerily like smoke.

If the air temperature near the unit is below the dew point, this causes water vapor to form in the air and condense into water droplets, thus causing the fog or smoke. A dirty air filter or low fan speed may aggravate the condition.

The cabin-bound air has to be cooled first in an intercooler, a device like a car radiator that sheds the heat to the ambient air scooped aboard for that purpose. To maintain a comfortable temperature for the passengers, automatic systems regulate the mixture of heat from the engines and cold from the air packs.

Is it safe to fly with smoke in the cabin?
A simple rule of thumb: if you board an airplane filled with what appears to be smoke, and the cabin crew and pilots are conducting business as usual, it’s a pretty safe bet it’s not toxic fumes that are filling the cabin. Can a smoke detector bring down a plane?
Onboard fires, for example from cigarettes, can bring down planes. It’s why “tampering with, disabling or destroying a lavatory smoke detector” is a serious federal offense in the US. Smoke in the cabin is a pretty automatic trigger for an immediate diversion in flight and, once on the ground, often an evacuation.
Why is there fog in the air around the AC vents?
The ambient temperature is close to the dew point. The injection of colder conditioned air in the cabin decreases the temperature around the AC vents ( inlet air on the picture below): The temperature quickly goes below the dew point causing invisible gas (water vapor) condensation into visible liquid water droplets (fog).
