Can smart people be socially awkward?

They extrapolate past experiences. Being logical thinkers, highly intelligent people use past experiences to predict future outcomes. This can lead to high levels of social anxiety, as any possible negative outcome will certainly cross their mind along the way.
Intelligent people do not lack social skills, at least according to other people of similar intelligence. For example more intelligent people tend to use sarcasm more. They typically also use a larger vocabulary, think faster, or observe more deeply.
Why do nerds lack social skills?
They lack social skills because they lack emotional intelligence. To take it further: nerds lack emotional intelligence because they have learnt to ignore the relevant emotions. That is why bullies are able to bait nerds; they both feel that the nerds’ denial of group emotions makes them culpable.
Is everyone an Overthinker?
Although there’s some evidence that suggests women are more likely to be overthinkers than men (which is why I included an entire chapter about it my latest book, 13 Things Mentally Strong Women Don’t Do), the truth is, everyone overthinks sometimes. Overthinking is a common issue I address in my therapy office.
Anybody with an intelligence level far off the average of those around them may be seen as lacking in social skills… “intelligent” or “dumb” is always relative. Saying intelligent people lack social skills is unintelligent.

Is there a correlation between being an introvert and intelligence?
In fact there’s almost a negative correlation as many intelligent people lack social skills or are strong introverts, just avoid socializing and sociability in general. A complete lack of sociability however puts one in the autistic scales and this becomes an inhibition to learning, thus decreasing intelligence.
Are intelligent people less susceptible to the what-if’s?
13. Intelligent people are simply less able to dilute reality. Most people choose to ignore all the possibilities, the “what-if’s,” but that doesn’t make them less a part of reality, it makes them less a part of their reality. Unfortunately, intelligent people lack the ability to do this (for better and for much, much worse.)
