Does accepting your emotions mean you enjoy the emotions you are feeling?

Acceptance simply means being aware of your emotions and accepting them for what they are right now, knowing that they won’t last. In some ways, accepting emotions means also accepting that emotions will change. When we are happy, we have to accept that happiness is a short-term condition; we will not always be happy.

Does pretending to be happy make you happy?

Even though you may pretend to be happy out of care for others, pretending to be happy is likely to only sap even more of your energy. It may appear that pretending to be happy is going to help your relationships and keep the people around you feeling better, but that’s not actually the case.

Genetics (or, more specifically, brain and personality structure, including self-control) can affect the emotional expression of an individual or family.

Do we help or choose our emotions?

We can’t help how we feel, but we can choose how we act. Again and again in therapy, I find myself emphasizing the distinction between feeling an emotion and acting on it. Many patients, and non-patients too, take undue responsibility for their emotions, as though feelings were volitional behaviors, the result of a choice.
