How do you make an oil painting look flat?

There are many things you can do to make oil paint flat or matte.

  1. Use a very absorbent surface.
  2. Add a lot of thinner.
  3. You can add some silica frit (fine sand, diatomaceous earth) to lower the proportion of oil to mineral substance, but I don’t like to add stuff that dulls the color even more.
