How many types of Spinosaurus are there?
Two species
Species and Specimens Two species of Spinosaurus have been named: Spinosaurus aegyptiacus (“Egyptian spine lizard”) and Spinosaurus marocannus (“Moroccan spine lizard”). S. marocannus was originally described by Russell as a new species based on the length of its neck vertebrae.
What happened to the first Spinosaurus skeleton?
The original remains were destroyed in World War II, but additional material has come to light in the early 21st century. It is unclear whether one or two species are represented in the fossils reported in the scientific literature.
Is MSNM V4047 Spinosaurus or Sigilmassasaurus?
This is due to the fact that a paper written by Arden et al, saying how MSNM v4047 is actually not Spinosaurus, but belonged to Sigilmassasaurus. This theory, however has no evidence whatsoever that this was true. It was simply a different way of classifying the fossil specimens. The only other fossils of Sigilmassasaurus is some veterbrae.
Is Sigilmassasaurus a valid genus?
“A paper published this year by Thomas Arden and his colleagues in 2018 concluded Sigilmassasaurus was a valid genus and formed a tribe with Spinosaurus termed Spinosaurini. The largest specimen of Spinosaurus cf. aegyptiacus, MSNM V4047, was tentatively assinged to S. brevicollis.
What does msnm V 4047 mean?
The partial rostrum portrayed here (and to which the restoration is scaled to), MSNM v 4047, was referred to the species by Maganuco and Dal Sasso in 2005. Both authors were coauthors of the 2014 papers along with Nizar Ibrahim, Paul Sereno, and colleagues.
What is the difference between Spinosaurus and Sigilmassasaurus?
Sigilmassasaurus was basically a different version of Spinosaurus. They both belonged to the same specimen and while controversy may be arising towards my claim, you might notice based on previous fossil records and discoveries over the years that many dinosaurs were proven to not have existed at all.
