Yes, they are. Nails are made of keratin, a type of protein, so biodegradable. However, keratin is one the tougher side of proteins and takes a long time to decompose. For example, human hair and nails are sometimes found in archeological excavations, however, not universally.
Do nails dissolve?
Fingernails, like hair, are made of keratin, a protein that is fairly resistant to microbial decomposition. However, it does eventually decompose, if exposed to the right bacteria and/or fungi. Hair and fingernails take much longer than other human body parts to break down.

Although foreign DNA may persist under fingernails in a harsh environment for up to 48 h [2, 11, 12], Matte et al. [7] found that even after the deliberate deposition of cellular debris through scratching, foreign DNA rapidly decays beyond 6 h.
How long does it take for human hair to decompose?
It takes between one and two years for hair to break down in soil. Still, specific soil conditions will affect the rate of decomposition. The decomposition will occur faster if the area is warm and moist. These facts are true for human hair.
How long does it take for a metal nail to decompose?

Andrew – So one, yes you’re right. It’s disgusting. Do not do this. Some poor person’s having to clean up behind you around the world. So, it’s keratin that makes up your fingernails. So, that’s actually quite hard to break down. It’s not something that biology really evolve for to live off fingernails which is, I’m kind of grateful for.
