Why do motors have fins?
Fins tend to increase the surface area of motor body & as air flows through it, It takes away the heat of motor through it. So, Simply stated, Fins help in better heat dissipation of motor by increasing its outer surface area.
Why are fins installed on electric motor?
In general, electric motors used fins and an axial fan as tools of the thermal management system to reduce electric motor’s working temperature. The fins are usually mounted on an electric motor outer surface, which is its housing. Its function is to increase heat transfer rate by natural convection.
Do DC motors have coils?
A DC motor has coils of wire mounted in slots on a cylinder of ferromagnetic material, which is termed the armature. The armature is mounted on bearings and is free to rotate. It is mounted in the magnetic field produced by permanent magnets or current passing through coils of wire, which are called the field coils.
Why DC motor size is bigger than AC motor?
The cross sectional area of the conductor is more in d.c motor than a.c motor. To decrease the resistance of the winding, hence to increase the current carrying capacity of d.c motor need to use more cross-sectional area of conductor.
What is the purpose of fin?
Fins typically function as foils that produce lift or thrust, or provide the ability to steer or stabilize motion while traveling in water, air, or other fluids. Fins are also used to increase surface areas for heat transfer purposes, or simply as ornamentation. Fins first evolved on fish as a means of locomotion.
Which motor is used in cooler AC or DC?
In fans both AC & DC motor is used, in Indian Domestic fans (Ceiling/ Table fans) single phase 230V 50Hz AC induction motors will use and in case of Traveling fans (chargeable) DC motors will use. Mostly AC motor fans are used because for DC fans we require large AC to DC converters.
What does a commutator do in a DC motor?
The commutator on the DC generator converts the AC into pulsating DC. The commutator assures that the current from the generator always flows in one direction. The brushes ride on the commutator and make good electrical connections between the generator and the load.
Is DC motor more powerful than AC?
AC motors are generally considered to be more powerful than DC motors because they can generate higher torque by using a more powerful current. However, DC motors are typically more efficient and make better use of their input energy.
What is the advantage of fins?
The main benefits of using fins have little to do with working your legs. Many competitive swimmers, or those trying to improve their technique, will use fins to increase their speed through the water, helping to improve their posture and keeping their hips high in the water.
Why do DC motors carry large amount of field current?
These types of Dc motors carries large amount of field current because the internal structure of these motors, the armature coil is wounded with few turns of large wire. These motors have large amount of starting torque but does not have good regulation speed.
Why do electric motors have fins on the outer body?
The large surface area of the fins helps in faster heat dissipation. Motors with fins on outer body have fan at one end of shaft, with a fan cover. When motor is running, the fans forces air over the fins and cools the motor. This way he fins help in maintaining the motor cool.
How do fins help in better heat dissipation of a motor?
A general rule states that greater the area of contact, More is the heat transfer. Fins tend to increase the surface area of motor body & as air flows through it, It takes away the heat of motor through it. So, Simply stated, Fins help in better heat dissipation of motor by increasing its outer surface area.
What is the difference between AC motors and DC motors?
AC motors can also include variable-frequency drives to control the motor’s speed and torque, while DC motors are available in self-excited and separately excited-type models. Each motor type has different advantages that make them best suited for different commercial and industrial applications.
