YES, ceramic pipes are safe to smoke out of if the maker uses non-toxic, lead-free glazes and clay, fires their pieces at the appropriate temperature based on the types of clay and materials they are using, AND as long as the pipe or water pipe is glazed on the inside.
Is it safe to smoke out of air dry clay?
No, because air-dry clay isn’t actual clay. It’s made from paper, resin and glue. The acrylic paint would also make it even more unsafe. Yes, there are indeed smoking pipes made from clay, but to make one you’ll have to use natural, actual clay that is free from dangerous chemical substances like lead, mercury, etc.
What kind of clay can you use for pipes?
White Earthenware clay is the safest and most common type used for smoking pipes and food contact surfaces.
Why is my polymer clay smoking?
If your clay is burning, your oven is too hot. Most polymer clay is far more heat tolerant than you’d expect. It will not instantly burn at 1° above the recommended setting. Polymer clay does not burn and turn black unless the oven is near 350°F (190°C).
Is oven baked clay Safe?
It is perfectly safe to cure or bake polymer clay in your home oven. Manufacturers cannot certify their material for making food utensils, so polymer clay is not certified to be used for food contact.

For making things that are thin or have areas that are thinner than 1/4″ (6mm), make sure that you’re using a strong clay such as Premo, Fimo, Pardo, Kato, Cernit, or Souffle. Sculpey III, Original Sculpey, Super Sculpey, and Bake Shop are all quite brittle after baking and should not be used, unsupported, in any area thinner than 1/4″ (6mm).
