Physical fear is natural and essential to our survival, but it’s important to remember that irrational fear is not. It is irrational to be afraid of what doesn’t exist. In fact, it can cause actual harm. Perhaps life isn’t so much about abandoning our fears but learning to embrace them in order to live boldly.

Why is fear necessary in life?

Fear helps protect us. It makes us alert to danger and prepares us to deal with it. Feeling afraid is very natural — and helpful — in some situations. Fear can be like a warning, a signal that cautions us to be careful.

    1) Challenge fearful thinking. It is very easy to listen to thoughts that warn us about danger. Sometimes these thoughts keep us safe. 2) Tell yourself affirming statements. You can further rationalize by telling yourself that you do not know what the future holds. 3) Distract yourself. Distraction has been shown to be a helpful behavioral response when anxious. Research has shown that using distraction can be a protective factor against anxiety. [6] 4) Imagine yourself succeeding without fear. Get a hold of your imagination before it runs wild. 5) Celebrate small steps. Overcoming fear isn’t going to happen completely overnight. Work on making incremental changes.
